Dorothy is a young girl with a heart of gold, soulful eyes that will melt you instantly, and a resilient spirit. After a rough and traumatic start to life on the streets, she has spent the last few months healing, gaining strength, and learning what it feels like to be safe and loved.Age: Young
Gender: Female
Breeds: Pit Bull Terrier, Hound
New people and new situations can cause her some anxiety. However, if she is given space and not forced, she does fantastic. She just needs to process things at her own pace. After a brief adjustment period, she transforms
into a sweet, playful, and highly energetic companion.
She loves other dogs once she realizes they are friendly and safe. She plays with female dogs every day and knows them well. She would love a confident dog companion that matches her rough playstyle.
She tries to play with children the same way she plays with other dogs. Because she may get a little too rough when she's excited, she will do best in a home with older kids or a family diligent about supervising her around young children.
Dorothy is house-trained with the use of a doggy door. While she is comfortable resting in an open crate when she chooses, being confined with the door closed makes her anxious and can trigger an urge to escape. She would do best in a home where crating is not required and other safe options such as baby gates can be used when she needs to be left alone.
She hasn’t started formal leash walks just yet, as she is still learning to feel comfortable wearing a collar, harness, and leash.
She is still building her confidence outside of the home, and for now, should be considered a flight risk in unfamiliar outdoor settings. She is hesitant to go out the front door, and when taken beyond her familiar surroundings, she can become frightened.
She feels most secure indoors or enjoying time in a safely fenced backyard. Her adopter will need to be especially cautious as she gradually learns that the outside world can be a safe place, too.
Dorothy is looking for a patient, understanding household. She would thrive with a family eager and dedicated to help her become more relaxed. With slow, gentle, consistent, and positive exposure to the world, this sweet girl is going to overcome her fears and make a truly incredible loyal companion.

Adoption fees cover pre-adoption veterinary costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age-appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England, if necessary. The adoption fee is set at a level that enables adoption; they do not cover our costs. Thank you for your generosity and interest in our dogs!
Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse, whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
