Viggo
Size: Large
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Breeds: German Shepherd Dog, Crossbreed
Viggo lives up to his name often linked to strength, valor and determination. He is a large, stunning German Shepherd who is loyal, very intelligent and smart at figuring things out very quickly. And he is already an excellent guard dog. Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Breeds: German Shepherd Dog, Crossbreed
Unknown with Cats
Viggo was adopted as a puppy in Texas. He lived with this family for 7 years until a divorce resulted in them unable to keep him. He was placed in a boarding kennel with minimal activities and stimulation and started showing signs of distress and was started on anxiety medication. He is now residing in a New England foster home.
He is fully housetrained and well-behaved in the home—but he cannot be crated under any circumstances. After spending six long months in a boarding facility where he was crated and ultimately injured himself trying to escape, crating is a trigger for him.
Viggo could be happy as an only dog soaking up all the love, or with another calm canine companion, provided introductions are slow and respectful. He is understandably protective of his food with other dogs, so he needs to be fed separately, but that is easy peasy to do.
A big fan of the outdoors, Viggo needs regular exercise to keep his body moving and his mind happy—he’s currently on supplements for early signs of hip osteoarthritis, and staying active is key to his comfort. He lives for running through the woods and exploring nature trails, so his ideal home would be in a suburban or rural setting with plenty of space to roam. And did we mention he loves car rides?
Viggo does have some separation anxiety, but he is getting better with it each day. In less than 2 weeks, his foster has already succeeded in weaning him off his anxiety medicine at night (with the advice of his vet).
He still would do best having someone around most of the day who understands his need for companionship.
Viggo has so much love to give and is ready to find his perfect match— a calm, committed home with a family who is patient, kind, and eager to make him an amazing part of their everyday life.

Paws New England is a foster-based rescue; our dogs reside in various locations throughout the south & New England.
Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary.
Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
