Meet Billy, a mini heeler who has blossomed into a very sweet, funny guy.

Living as a stray in rural Mississippi, scrounging for food and being used as target practice, Billy was found cowering under a house nursing numerous gunshot wounds, one that fractured a front leg, and a terrible skin infection. His future certainly wasn’t looking too bright.

But as luck would have it, he was discovered by a wonderful rescuer who spent hours trying to win his trust and get him to come within reach so she could help him. At long last, he ventured out and was whisked away for vet care and then transported to his foster home where he was given the time and care he needed to heal physically and emotionally. Luckily, he has no residual health problems from his tragic past other than some slight loss of vision in his left eye from one of the gunshot wounds, but it does not slow him down a bit.

Understandably, he was initially very shut down and timid, avoiding touch and eye contact. But love won and he began to seek affection in small doses.

Billy is a true heeler having the confidence typically seen with the breed, but he does carry some baggage from his previous abuse. He can be a little standoffish at times, but overall he is a very charming and amusing guy. Billy's adopter should be one who has some experience with anxious dogs.

Billy is a small fella, a whopping 25 lbs, and has a bit of Napoleon syndrome. He does not care for big dogs at all and lets it be known. It's possible he would do ok with a similar sized companion, though he has had some issues with one in his foster home. Right now we are saying a home with no other pets (unless adopter is highly experienced) would be best for Billy.

Billy's ideal home would be a moderately active household with no other pets or young children. He loves going on walks now that he has learned to walk on a leash. This boy is housebroken, crate trained and has not been destructive.

Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary.

Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
