Meet Reina and Timmy – Two Brave Souls on a Journey to TrustAge: Adult
Gender: Female
Breeds: Shepherd
Unknown with Cats/Kids
Reina is ready to move onto the next phase of her life- truly learning to be a "dog" and not a scared little girl always protecting her brother who just is not ready yet.
Reina and Timmy (formerly Mavis and Kolya) were placed in a boarding/training home and have been slow to progress but are doing better—their stories are below. While they will be adopted out separately, we felt it important that their stories remain joined.
Reina and Timmy, estimated to be around 1-2 years old, were terrified dogs rescued from Paragould, Arkansas. These dogs, along with many others, were living as "feral" dogs, fed by a wonderful man who did his best. It came to our attention that the dogs were being shot and poisoned, and we sent a team to the location to assist as best we could - several puppies were rescued and have gone on to have extraordinary homes; some were rescued but didn't survive secondary to injuries and suspected poison.
When they arrived on April 10, 2024, they were young adults starting their journey in fear and uncertainty. Completely shut down, they avoided eye contact and buried themselves in the back of their kennel, with Reina protectively laying over Timmy. In their new environment, they were given open kennels in a 10’ x 5’ corral, but for months, they only ventured out to use pee pads. Gradually, with daily training, patience, and love, both began to show signs of progress.
Reina:
Reina is the braver of the two and has started to come out of her shell. She loves playing with toys and collecting Nylabones in a pile. She’s cautious with people but enjoys butt scratches and eagerly takes treats from your hand. Reina is playful, sweet, and quirky, often approaching for pets but retreating when she’s had enough.
Leashes remain a challenge for Reina due to a bad experience in the past we think, but she’s making slow progress. Despite her cautious nature, she thrives with other dogs and shows a joyful, docile side in the right environment.
Timmy:
Timmy is the more nervous of the pair and relies heavily on Reina for comfort and confidence. While he hasn’t joined in on playtime yet, he’s recently begun barking for attention and stepping out of his “safe spots” with encouragement and treats. Timmy is still uncomfortable with leashes and freezes when one is applied.
Timmy’s progress is slower, but his small victories are a testament to his potential with continued patience and care.
Together:
Reina and Timmy share a strong bond, with Reina acting as Timmy’s protector. While separating them might help Reina grow more independent, it would be challenging for Timmy, who finds his safety in her presence.
Both need a calm, patient environment with understanding adopters willing to give them time to adjust. Reina would thrive in a home with other dogs and someone to nurture her playful spirit. Timmy needs ongoing support and reassurance to help him overcome his fears.
These two sweet souls have already made incredible progress and are ready for the next step in their journey—finding a loving home that will continue to help them heal and flourish.
