Sammy could be the one for you!
He is a sweet chocolate dog who loves his people and will make you
feel like the most loved person in the world when you get home! He is housebroken and crate trained,
although he is happier in a gated room than in a crate. He has a good grasp of basic commands and
loves to please. As a medium energy dog, Sammy doesn’t mind spending most of the day lounging
somewhere comfy or cuddling.
His favorite thing in the world is going on a walk, so a long one or two per day is a must unless you have
a fenced yard in which he can get his exercise. Even with a fenced yard, Sammy would enjoy occasional
walks – and he walks well on leash! Sammy can keep up with you on short runs as well as long hikes,
and doesn’t require a yard if he gets his walks. This boy also has a fondness for hard chews, particularly
water buffalo horns.
Issues? OK, he has a few, but which of us doesn’t? He doesn’t love the car but can tolerate shorter trips,
and has successfully managed trips of up to an hour. Sammy also doesn’t enjoy being apart from his
humans, but when left alone he settles down and doesn’t destroy or chew anything.
Worth noting Sammy is protective of his home. He barks (fairly briefly) at sounds outside the door and
strangers entering the home. His loud bark may startle some people but he has learned commands to
help him settle and he relaxes once he gets to know you. His foster has found that he will now accept a
stranger in the house within a few minutes. Because he does bark at many outside sounds, he is not a
candidate for apartment living.
A quiet home without young children and frequent visitors would be ideal for Sammy, although he is
learning to deal with visitors in his foster home. Although he likes other dogs, Sammy came to us with
many scars that indicate he had previously been attacked by other dogs, probably from his time on the
streets. As a result, in a PTSD-like reaction, Sammy is very quick to defend himself if he feels in danger of
being attacked, which can happen if another dog gives him a hard bump or a play nip. Therefore, we feel
Sammy should be an only dog.

Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
