Sweet little man Zack - an adorable tri-color terrier mix who is currently almost 10 weeks old and getting cuter with every passing day.

Zack and his brother Scruff (also available) were brought to a humane society in Mississippi by a gentleman who didn’t want them - we aren’t exactly sure where they came from but we sure are glad they landed with us.

Foster mom just adores this little punkin’ - how could you not? He’s playful, smart as a whip (note he’s doing puzzles in photos)

Zack was noted to have a deformity of his right front leg which we had checked out by an orthopedic vet in Memphis - he thinks this is a congenital defect that has caused a luxation of his leg from the joint however it is not repairable at this time in his life. There are two options in the long run - watch him as he grows and see if it bothers him at which time amputation may be the best option. Surgical correction can be done when he’s an adult (need to wait for growth plates to close) however it will be 2-3 surgeries and it will never be “normal.”

For now, we’ve elected to not amputate but send him to his forever home with the promise that if the leg becomes a hinderance to him, we will work with the family to cover the cost of either amputation or surgical repair if that’s what they decide. We have many “tripod” dogs in our program and find that typically this is the best option - each surgery would require weeks and weeks of rehab and there are no guarantees at the end.

He is not in pain per the vet and is as active as any puppy and can remain so - it may never bother him to the point where repair or amputation is needed.

We are hoping to find a family who realize that none of this takes away from how adorable and special this guy is.

Foster mom for this guy is one of our amazing ones and she’s working on all the commands and housetraining/crate training. You’ll be getting a fabulous special, special boy. Here’s what she has to say so far -

Zack is ALL THINGS PUPPY!! He is full of energy! He does AMAZING in his kennel and, for a roughly 9 week old pup, has really caught on to potting outside. He has done very well alerting me with the help of the potty bells hanging on the door.

Since he’s been with me he sleeps through the night, loves and plays well with my three (very large) dogs. He is still in the nipping stage, but we are working on that. He is very inquisitive about other dogs tails….I believe he thinks they are a built on toy.

PLEASE - Think long and hard before adopting a puppy - consider the lifestyle change this puppy will come with - he cannot be crated for more than 3-4 hours at a time until he’s older, puppy proofing your home will be necessary, puppies scratch and nip so if you have small children, can they handle this?? Training will be so important in this puppy’s life, do you have the time??

Please consider purchasing this book before adopting.  Perfect Puppy in 7 Days - How to Start Your Puppy Off Right, Sophia Yin, DVM - it is an amazing book that we recommend very highly and have had amazing feedback on.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION -

Paws New England is a foster-based rescue - our dogs reside in various locations throughout the south and New England.

Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary.

Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
