Jo came to us after a Good Samaritan found him after he had obviously been struck by a car. He was dragging himself as he was unable to walk. For 2 weeks apparently people had been driving past him - finally someone took charge and made the right calls to the right people. He was brought to our friends at Memphis Veterinary Services who got him on his path to recovery.

His spinal cord injuries were nonsurgical, so a physical therapy approach was undertaken. This means that there was no quick fix for him. To get well, Jo needed to do the work and heal himself.

This guy killed it.

He started standing then walking then running. His bladder control started to return as did his bowel function (though not 100%). He continues to persevere and is surprising us every day with his determination to get around and thrive. And he does it all with a goofy song in his heart!

Jo is dog friendly with dogs of all sizes, breeds, and ages. He can live with kids but they would need to be mindful of his prior injuries with care to not jump on him etc. So long as everyone in the home (people and other pets) understand that rough play can undo the work he has done to get this far, Jo is pretty flexible as to where he lives!

He can maneuver a couple of steps, but long flights of stairs would probably be too difficult at this time. He has come really far and would thrive in a home that will continue to work with him and with a veterinarian to see that he maintains the mobility he has worked to achieve.

Like all our dogs, Jo needs a home that understands he is working as hard as he can. He will make you laugh every day with his antics. We can’t predict how much more he will recover long term, but we can promise you he will do the work, with your help, to improve as much as he can!

Jo has some separation anxiety and needs at least one other friendly “dog pal” in his home to keep him company while you’re gone from the home.

Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary.

Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your newly adopted dog will help others in need.
