Fostering in New England

Shipley would like a word with you…
..
Shipley just had his second birthday! This 35 pound Shepherd/Beagle mix spent his first birthday with his very own family in Tennessee who loved him very much. Sadly, they fell on hard times and had to move to a place that wouldn’t allow him there (that AUDACITY of some landlords, right?) We jumped at the chance to take him in!

In terms of behavior, Shipley has no real behaviors for concern. He is crate trained and walks well on a leash. His foster loves to walk with him. He’s not a puller; she said he actually likes to WALK. Sometimes he wants to play with the dogs he sees while out walking, but mostly he is a take time to see the beauty and smell the roses kind of boy. She labels him as moderate energy.

Shipley weighs in at 35 pounds, so he can live in almost any kind of setting. He is very good with other dogs. He has minor separation anxiety which seems to go away when he becomes familiar with his surroundings. While he would be fine to be your one and only, we think he would also love to have another dog by his side to show him the lay of the land.

We have not yet tested him around cats. We think he would need a dog savvy cat. He would also be good with children who understand how to be respectful around dogs. Children are still relatively new to Shipley, and he isn’t a fan of being handled roughly (ears pulled, tail pulled, etc). But he really likes people with manners.

He doesn’t seem to guard his resources (like food and toys). If you have another animal in the home, we recommend that you feed him separately at first until he knows that he is safe and has food security.

Shipley will need to be crated when you aren’t there, at least to start. He won’t destroy your things if left alone, but he will explore your house and climb on furniture whenever he can. He’s not quite tall enough to be a counter surfer, but he will be on your coffee table. If you have a chair pulled out? He’s going to try to see the view from your tabletop. He does whine a little in the crate at first, but he settles down quickly.

We recommend basic obedience training for Shipley. He’s been working on basic commands, and he’s getting pretty good at them, but basic obedience is a nice setting where he would be able to bond with his new family. He is eager to please and will be a wonderful addition to almost any family.
