SERVED

UPDATE: 7/10/07

The Massachusetts entity of PAWS New England has begun filing for our 501c3 non-profit status - We have found someone to help us with this who is very experienced in this area of law as it can be very difficult to do so.

What the state of Massachusetts wants from us basically is:
  • Become registered rescue with the Commonwealth (so we must be a 501c3 to do this)
  • If approved as a 501c3; Apply to state to be a legitimate rescue bringing dogs in from out of state;
  • Conform to importation rules which requires quarantine which is  (at this point 48 hours) of animals in approved facility and may go to 7-10 days in the near future.
** NOTE ** We at PAWS New England feel that quarantining a dog at this stage for 48 hours does absolutely nothing to stop the spread of canine disease and our vets agree.

Our dogs at Hillcrest facility are in isolation for no less than 2-3 weeks, negating a need for quarantine.  We at PAWS New England have never brought a dog into any state with Parvo, distemper or any known disease which would cause an outbreak of any type.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:

THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HAS SERVED PAWS WITH NOTICE THAT IT MAY NO LONGER CONDUCT RESCUE OPERATIONS WHILE CONDUCTING IT’S BUSINESS IN THE COMMONWEALTH.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS REGARDING THE NOTICE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, PLEASE  CONTACT US.  PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE.  WE APPRECIATE THE TREMENDOUS SUPPORT.

IT’S NOT COOL TO BE CRUEL!

To: America’s major sports leagues

JOIN WITH BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY AGAINST DOG FIGHTING.

Several weeks ago, law enforcement officials uncovered evidence of a dog fighting operation on property owned by Michael Vick, quarterback for the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons. The investigation continues.

It appears that the violent subculture of dog fighting has permeated the world of professional sports and entertainment. Dog fighting is horrifically cruel for the dogs, but also a dangerous, illegal activity that often involves violence, weapons, illegal gambling and drugs.

We, the undersigned, urge America’s major sports leagues—the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer to take immediate action to help stop participation and support of dog fighting by taking the following actions:

  • Announce policies condemning dog fighting as a horrifically cruel, illegal activity that will not be tolerated
  • Establish stiff penalties, including fines and suspensions, for any high profile athletes or league employee who associates in any way with dog fighting
  • Cooperate fully with investigations of athletes alleged to be involved in dog fighting
  • Cooperate with Best Friends and other animal welfare groups to promote ways to eradicate dog fighting

Sincerely, PAWS New England
